For years, financial markets and venture funds flooded mobile applications and lightweight software platforms with capital because they were easy to establish and capable of rapid growth. But the financial landscape is now radically reshaping its priorities, as the appeal of superficial digital solutions declines in favor of what is known as "hard tech" (Hard Tech / Deep Tech). So how did laboratory research and complex physical components become the preferred investment haven in an era of geopolitical and industrial transformation?
The Exposure of "Lightweight Software": From Growth Mania to the Replication Trap
In recent decades, venture funding has focused on investing in software companies because of their low physical costs and high profit margins.
However, the sector's economic fundamentals reveal a strategic vulnerability: the ease of developing applications and cloud solutions has made the barrier to entry extremely low. This has intensified competition, fueled the phenomenon of "burning cash" to acquire customers, and made it easy for other competitors to copy companies' ideas within just a few months. As artificial intelligence capabilities for generating code and developing applications automatically have grown, the "economic moat" of startups built on straightforward software has eroded.
The Strategic Value of Physical Assets: An Innovation Moat
On the other side, "hard tech" focuses on developing solutions that combine advanced engineering, physics, biotechnology, semiconductors, and energy technologies.
The knowledge-based explanation for this sector's relative resilience lies in the difficulty of its engineering and the protection afforded by its intellectual property. According to a Boston Consulting Group report, its share of total venture capital funding rose from 12% in 2014 to 24% in 2023—although absolute funding declined during the same period, from $158 billion in 2021 to $79 billion in 2023. Companies that build more efficient solid-state batteries, design advanced computing chips, or develop vital medical devices create strategic assets that cannot easily be commercially replicated. Although these companies require significant capital expenditure (Capex) and longer development cycles, once mature they secure near-total control of the market and strong protection for their financial resources, giving them exceptional investment valuations.
The Local Investment Dimension: Learning from Global Experience
Turning to the Saudi economy, this global shift aligns directly with the priorities of the Public Investment Fund and national funds, which are moving beyond merely supporting everyday consumer applications and focusing on localizing advanced industries.
The Kingdom's investments in semiconductors, renewable energy, and electric vehicle manufacturing through companies such as "Ceer" (Ceer), along with the establishment of deep-tech companies, demonstrate a profound understanding of this financial equation. Reliance on hard technology not only raises the share of local content and ensures technological independence, but also builds an industrial ecosystem that creates highly skilled jobs and attracts foreign direct investment (FDI) to non-oil sectors.
The New Value Equation
Capital cycles in the markets indicate that the dividing line is no longer between software and hardware, but between what is easy to copy and what is protected by research and engineering depth. Even within deep tech, 33% of funding goes to digital platforms. The next investment bet is no longer on companies that devise the fastest way to deliver orders or organize tasks, but on those that solve the world's complex physical problems in energy, manufacturing, and healthcare.
