Kingdom Holding Company announced the completion of the acquisition of a 70% stake in Al Hilal Club Company from the Public Investment Fund, after fulfilling all regulatory and internal conditions related to the transaction.
The company stated in its announcement that, on September 1, 2026, all requirements stipulated in the sale and purchase agreement had been completed, including obtaining all regulatory approvals and the necessary no-objection certificates to complete the acquisition.
The financial details indicated that "Kingdom Holding" paid the fund the full transaction consideration of SAR 840 million. This amount represents the value of the acquired stake based on a total club equity valuation of SAR 1.2 billion.
Portfolio Diversification and Operational Efficiency
Student "Rimas Almashali" @Rimas Almashali explained her view, saying: "I believe the acquisition strengthens Kingdom Holding's portfolio diversification and opens up a new source of revenue through sponsorships, broadcasting, and sales. However, the actual financial impact will depend on the club's ability to achieve sustainable revenue growth and improve its operational efficiency, rather than on the acquisition itself."
Privatization and Generating Actual Returns
Student "Arwa Alhuwaiti" @Arwa Alhuwaiti shared her opinion, saying: "I believe the entry of the private sector into club ownership is a strategic step toward diversifying the investments of holding companies, particularly if clubs can transition from reliance on support to generating sustainable revenues from sponsorships, ticket sales, and commercial investments. Ultimately, the success of the investment depends on the club's ability to generate actual returns and financial sustainability, not merely on an increase in the value of the asset."
Leveraging Fan Popularity and Generating Cash Flows
For her part, student "Ghadah Alwallan" @Ghadah Alwallan highlighted the investment dimension, saying: "From an investment perspective, Kingdom Holding's entry into the sports-club sector represents a genuine opportunity to benefit from the growth of the sector under the objectives of Vision 2030. However, the success of this investment is closely linked to management's ability to convert the club's substantial popularity into sustainable cash flows and returns."
Diversifying Investments and Improving Operational Efficiency Through Technology
Student "Jumana Alshehri" @Jumana Alshehri added her analysis, saying: "I believe the acquisition represents a strategic step toward diversifying Kingdom Holding's investments, especially since owning a 70% stake in Al Hilal Club opens multiple revenue streams, including sponsorships, broadcasting rights, and sales. However, the real financial impact depends on the club's ability to generate sustainable revenues and improve its operational efficiency, rather than solely on the acquisition value. The use of technology and improved management of facilities and supply chains will also contribute effectively to reducing costs and enhancing the fan experience, supporting the club's transformation into a sustainable investment asset aligned with the objectives of Vision 2030."
Sports Technology and the Importance of Corporate Governance
Student "Alwaled Alnufaie" @Alwaled Alnufaie shared his strategic perspective, saying: "I believe Kingdom Holding's acquisition of sports clubs represents a good opportunity to diversify investments and sources of income, particularly by leveraging technological solutions and sports technology (Sports-Tech) to improve operational efficiency and enhance the fan experience. In the long term, this could have a positive impact on financial performance, while emphasizing the importance of complying with governance standards and regulations to ensure investment sustainability and achieve the objectives of Vision 2030."
Pioneering Sports Privatization and the Club's Historic Support
In an analytical reading of the deal's dimensions, expert "Abdulaziz Khrais" explained the strategic context, saying: "This acquisition is a unique event being carried out for the first time, but it was also anticipated. In terms of pioneering significance, this step builds on the club privatization project launched four years ago, which involved converting clubs into companies and having the Public Investment Fund acquire them in preparation for offering them to investors. From the perspective of expectations, Prince Alwaleed bin Talal—the owner and principal investor in Kingdom Holding Company—is Al Hilal's largest historic supporter, making this acquisition an anticipated strategic step. Financially, the transaction was completed through the full payment of SAR 840 million to the fund, based on a total club equity valuation of SAR 1.2 billion."
Earnings Quality and the Challenge of Sustainable Commercial Cash Flows
In an analytical reading of the deal, financial and economic analyst "Hamad Alsaeed"@Hamad Alsaeed explains: The acquisition of a 70% stake in Al Hilal Club for SAR 840 million values the equity at SAR 1.2 billion, compared with an enterprise value of SAR 1.4 billion—a difference of SAR 200 million that is typically interpreted as net debt and liabilities, including player transfer payables.
Operationally, the acquired asset generated revenue of SAR 1.27 billion in the 2024–2025 season, with a net profit of SAR 37.8 million, representing a margin of approximately 3% and an implied multiple of 31.7 times reported earnings.
The most important point for the valuation is that donations alone amounted to SAR 212 million, a non-commercial item exceeding net profit by approximately 5.6 times. Excluding it would turn the result into a loss of approximately SAR 174 million. This item was also recurring in the previous season.
It is worth noting that this deal is the fund's first partial exit from its ownership of a club, while retaining a 30% stake. What merits monitoring is not the price, but the new owners' ability to transform a revenue base built on sponsorships and donations into a commercial model with sustainable revenues and higher earnings quality.
